WILD HOGS THREATEN FLORIDA AGRICULTURE

A Florida Forestry Assn. message dated 8/22/12 tells of the damage and danger caused by feral hogs in Florida.  For years, they have been heavier in the Lake Okeechobee and northern woods areas, but recently have become common in central Florida too.  Thinning them out has been difficult with sows typically having two litters of a dozen each, or so, per year.

Hogs root up vegetation and will severely damage most kinds of crops. While primarily vegetarian, farmers have found hogs eating chickens, goats and sheep. People are subject to attack.

Communicable diseases are also a danger. Tuberculosis, brucellosis, salmonellosis, and anthrax are spread by some swine. Ticks, lice and fleas are commonly on them.  Be careful of spreading disease if field dressing hogs as game.
