Northeast Florida Expands Foreign Trade Zone

A recent expansion of Northeast Florida's foreign trade zone added St. John's, Putnam and Bradford counties to Duval, Clay, Nassau, Baker and Columbia counties creating one of the largest foreign trade zones in the United States.

The U.S. Department of Commerce's expansion of the zone means companies in these counties can get certified in 30 days and save money on federal customs duties. Usually the approval process can take anywhere from six to nine months. It's a great tool for companies interested in exporting and importing products and materials, and can help create job opportunities.

The Jacksonville Port Authority administers the foreign trade zone. JaxPort has been pushing to expand the boundaries in order to make the region more attractive for warehouses, distribution centers and manufacturers. Growth in these industries would generate more cargo shipments through the Port of Jacksonville, and would be a boost to the local economy.
