If you watch a lot of CNBC, you know that Constellation
Brands, a large beverage company selling beer and wine, Altria (Marlboros), Molson
Coors and Heineken have all invested in different “pot” companies, most of
which are located in Canada. Marijuana,
from which pot comes, actually has two chemicals. One is THC, and that’s the part with the
high. The second chemical is called CBD,
and it’s a potent painkiller and anti-inflammatory.
However, there’s a lowly plant which was once cultivated for
rope, dating back to the time when the US was the 13 colonies, and it contains the
painkilling and anti-inflammatory chemical CBD.
The plant is hemp.
The recently signed farm bill has made hemp a legal crop
again.
Several companies in the US have sprung up to sell products made
with CBD derived from hemp. One company,
MedTerra, grows its own hemp and manufactures hemp- based products for people
who want to try it to see if the painkiller and anti-inflammatory properties work
for them.
According to one of their spokesmen, hemp is such a valuable
crop that farmers may trade in their corn and wheat for a hemp crop, which could
reap more than tenfold income per acre compared to what they have been growing.
A second company called ShopCBDNow offers a variety of
products from several different manufacturers. They also wholesale CBD. They
originally began as a marijuana company because they are based in Oregon where
the product is legal.
They also grow hemp.
Their product lineup is wide, ranging from oils and topicals
to bath bombs, aloe lotion for sunburn, teas, syrups, coffee and pet treats. They
have additional flavored offerings too, like honey sticks, gummies in peach,
raspberry or blackberry, and lip balms in pina colada or mint flavors.
And finally, company in Miami called Advanced Therapeutics,
has privately labeled CBD products as flavored oils, as gummies, as creams with
coconut oil, a roll-on gel and what they call a wax.
They also have some products with a cooling ingredient, menthol and camphor, which they call Hemperature.
Products typically come as capsules, gummies, creams, lotions
or gels. There is a wide variety of consumables,
and there are even products for pets who have pain. The antidoping agency in the US, USADA, has
given the green light for athletes to use CBD therapeutically. It is not on the list of classified
substances that are banned.
