MARIJUANA in COLORADO STUDIED
Last night, I went to a ShAdCo (Sheriff's Advisory Council) meeting. The primary topic was a study of the effects in Colorado of the legalization of marijuana for medical use for ages of at least 21. It has quickly become recreational rather than medicinal with unfortunate results. Traffic accidents with marijuana (mj) involved have increased by 32%. Deaths with mj involved have increased from 10% of the total to 20%. School expulsions for mj have increased from 12% to 33%. Marijuana is packaged in styles attractive to children, such as multi-squared chocolate bars, where each square is one medical dose. It is in pop drinks, gummy beans and other candy. Two studies have indicated teenagers may lose 4 to 6 points of IQ from just one joint a week over a period of a few years.
Gangs control much of the supply and sales. Violence is not generated by the mj, but is by the large cash flows. Colorado banks do not accept cash from known dealers, who launder it in businesses or carry it to other states. There is heavy promotion of legalization in Florida by those who may expect to become dealers. One of the promoters is thought to have arranged 60 stores for sales around the state expecting approval. Local police did not know of any organized opposition to legalization. If you know of such, please let me know.
