From the Florida Forestry Assn. comes a message of the damage caused to some countries in southeast Asia. Crooks are collaborating with officers of Laos, Cambodia and others to sell the old growth rosewood, primarily to China, where rosewood and ebony has been favorite furniture woods for centuries. Now the newly rich Chinese have the desire and money to pay for a forest tragedy of harvesting $600 million of protected trees. In the USA, Gibson Guitar company had a supply of rosewood worth half a million confiscated and paid a fine of $350,000.
