Golf in the Olympics Expected to Spur International Interest in the Sport

Golf in the Olympics Expected to Spur International Interest in the Sport

Many golf organizations indicate that one result of having golf included in the 2016 Olympics is that governments will back golf programs in countries where the sport is just beginning to grow.  In many locations, whether for past political or economic reasons or other outside forces, golf is just now emerging or re-emerging as an accepted sport.

One example of this is in Hungary, which was controlled by the Soviet Union for several decades after WW II.  In the early part of the 20th century, Hungary had noted golf champions, both men and women.  However, golf was not considered an approved sport by communist governments that dominated the country for most of the last 60 years.
Now the sport is coming back, and the numbers speak to a huge opportunity.

Today there are more than 10 million people in Hungary.  There are only 17 golf courses, and some of those are private.  Even taking into consideration the private clubs which would have perhaps 300-500 members unless they were also social clubs, that means there are approximately 588,000 people per course in Hungary today.  If there was ever opportunity for upside, it has to be golf in Hungary.  This link will take you to one of them. –Kathy Bissell
